Introduction

This course explores the 16 Habits of Mind as method to build intrinsic motivation among students grades K-4. The 16 Habits of Mind are a way of thinking or pedagogy according to Costa and Kallick. According to Costa and Kallick, employing Habits of Mind requires drawing forth certain patterns of intellectual behavior that produce powerful results. They are a composite of many skills, attitudes and proclivities including:


          Value: Choosing to employ a pattern of intellectual behavior rather than other, less productive patterns.
          Inclination: Feeling the tendency toward employing a pattern of intellectual behavior.
          Sensitivity: Perceiving opportunities for, and appropriateness of employing the pattern of behavior.

          Capability: Possessing the basic skills and capacities to carry through with the behavior.
          Commitment: Constantly striving to reflect on and improve performance of the pattern of intellectual behavior.

Additional researchers have divided the 16 Habits of Mind into the following categories:

          The habit of perspective
          The habit of analysis
          The habit of imagination
          The habit of empathy
          The habit of communication
          The habit of commitment
          The habit of humility
          The habit of joy


Unit 1:

1. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to reason why research suggests the implementation of the 16 Habits of Mind.

2. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to describe activities that can be used in the classroom to support the implementation of the 16 Habits of Mind.


Unit 2:

1. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to identify one Habit that their student population is lacking.(Perquisite)

2. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to implement a strategy or activity based on the need selected.

3. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to reflect on the success and benefit of of the activity.


Unit 3:

1. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to create their own lesson plan based on one of the 16 habits.

Unit 4:

1. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to reflect on what they have learned from the course.

2. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to facilitate discussion among students to see what they have learned from the lessons.

3. At the end of the unit, the learner will be able to make an action plan to identify ways to implement the 16 Habits within lessons or curriculum maps.
