My Topic and Purpose

The purpose of this course is to assist all curriculum designers and writers in seamlessly integrating self-regulated learning strategies into MOOC's. Self-regulated learning (SRL) is believed to focus on how learners take an active, purposeful and reflective role in their own learning experience and academic behaviors. By offering this course, I hope to provide SRL strategies that curriculum designers can build into their online curriculums to enhance student motivation and promote student engagement, persistence, and self-monitoring. After this course, curriculum designers will have the tools to incorporate key SRL aspects into the design and delivery of MOOCs.

What prior knowledge is needed for this course?

  1. Learners must understand Instructional Design (ID) and important components and features that make ID effective.
  2. Learners must have experience with creating and writing MOOC courses and modules.
  3. Learners must understand important components in building and fostering an online community.
  4. Learners must understand how to integrate ID strategies in MOOCs.
  5. Learners must be familiar with instructional technologies and educational software, and the implementation of instructional technology in content classrooms.
  6. Learners must be familiar with instructional technology terms such as MOOC, ID, PLS, community and the constructivist learning theory.

Needs Assessment

What are the current issues with SRL in MOOC?

  • Research has shown learners with a higher degree of SRL are more likely to succeed in online education. (ALBELBISI 2019) Developing self-regulated learning abilities in online courses is a key factor in achieving successful learning in an online environment. The current issue relates to supporting students in enhancing their self-regulated learning skills while learning in an online course. Those resources for students are limited.

How will this course address the needs of SRL in online learning?

  • This course will provide instructional designers with successful strategies and implementation frameworks on how to promote SRL strategies amongst learners and sustain SRL in online courses.
  • This course will give instructional designers the opportunity to create course polls, questionnaires and surveys to implement seamlessly, to enhance SRL in their courses.

Modules & Learning Outcomes

Module I Introduction

  • The learner will be able to become familiar with course overview, course expectations, and course outcomes.
  • The learner will participate in a pre-course survey that will grasp the significance of thinking flexibly when learning and having a growth mindset when participating in course discussions and activities.

Module II What is self-regulated learning (SRL)?

  • The learner will be able to define self-regulated learning and identify significant components in the SRL Framework by participating in course readings and video tutorials.
  • The learner will construct a concept map of their understanding and interpretation of what SRL means in MOOC as a module activity.
  • The learner will be assessed on the SRL Framework by identifying key elements within texts, video tutorials and other outside resources in a written formative assessment at the end of the module.

Module III What role does SRL play in MOOC?

  • Watch video tutorials and read educational blogs on the role of SRL in MOOC.
  • After the learner completes course readings and texts, the learner will be asked to provide two outside resources that support SRL in MOOC.
  • The learner will analyze the role of SRL in MOOC by participating in module reflection questions throughout the course module.
  • The learner will construct a journal, as form of assessment, on significant roles SRL plays in MOOC at the end of the module. (Journal may be in the form of paper, vodcast, podcast or collage)

Module IV What strategies work best in self-regulated learning?

  • The learner will participate in course readings and video tutorials about effective SRL strategies in MOOC.
  • The learner will be asked to choose two strategies from the course readings and explain how they can see the significance of how the strategy chosen is effective as a module activity.
  • The learner will be assessed on their understanding of SRL strategies and their effectiveness in MOOC through a formative assessment at the end of the module.

Module V Integrating SRL into MOOC platforms

  • The learner will participate in course readings and video tutorials on integrating SRL into MOOC platforms.
  • The learner will complete a formative assessment of integration strategies using the SRL framework.
  • The learner will complete a final project, designing a curriculum with an SRL framework, or creating an activity or module that portrays SRL strategies.

Analysis of the Learner and Context

What should you expect?

This course requires a constructivist learner. There are 5 attitudes you must have to be successful in this course.

  1. Be inquisitive. An inquisitive learner is one that asks many questions and wants to find out new information and will investigate.
  2. Take initiative. A learner that takes initiative is one that is able to make decisions independently and is a problem solver.
  3. Be confident. A confident learner is a learner that is not afraid to take risks and express their thoughts and ideas. A confident learner is able to handle frustration and disappointments
  4. Be inventive. An inventive learner is a learner that is able to think about things in new ways and to transfer ideas into different contexts.
  5. Be reflective. A reflective learner is a learner that will more than likely use their prior experiences to direct them in new situations and experiences.

This course will require

  • the learner to construct knowledge that is based on personal experiences and hypotheses of the environment
  • collaborative learning with peers, building relationships of mutual trust and respect
  • all learners to be actively engaged, and they take responsibility for their own and for other’s learning.
  • the learner to set goals of improving the quality of SRL in their online courses
  • the learner to discuss their ideas and the ideas of others

Performance-Based Objectives

This course will equip learners with the skills to

  1. Define self-regulated learning.
  2. Identify significant components in the SRL Framework.
  3. Construct a concept map of understanding and interpretation of what SRL means in online learning
  4. Identify key elements in SRL Framework within texts, video tutorials and other outside resources in a written formative assessment.
  5. Analyze the role of SRL in MOOC by describing how the role of SRL in MOOC relates to successful learning in an MOOC.
  6. Review and Evaluate two strategies from the course readings and explain the significance of how it will promote and sustain SRL MOOCs.
  7. Design a MOOC unit with SRL framework.

How will your thinking be assessed? The assessments in this course follow an alternative approach combining multiple learning outcomes. My goal for this course is to produce curricula artifacts that can be used to enhance learner’s professional portfolio or MOOC environments. Examples of these assessment include

  • creation of concept map
  • construction of learning journal, an example of a demonstration of skill and understanding
  • collection of written responses and self-reflections
  • rubrics, criteria of excellence, mastery, and self-assessing
  • whole-class discussion, an example of discourse that can yield information for instructors

How will your learning be evaluated? Learners will compare their final project with a past curriculum, activity or module. Learners will write a final reflection of significant differences between past works, justify the components chosen in the final project, and further educational inquiries they’ve inquired during this course.
