NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Statement of Intent:

It is my intention to create a mini-course that will be helpful to co-workers at my place of employment in making a quick and smooth transition to Word 2007 from Word 2003.

Instructional Problem:

A situation has arisen at my place of employment that is presenting a serious productivity problem. Our new computers have Word 2007 installed on them. In the past, all of the employees have used several versions (most recently 2003) of the product. For years, upgrades of Office included the same interface within the applications, with minor changes for new features. When the employees opened Word 2007 for the first time, there was a great amount of distress over the changes in the software. It is essential the employees learn how to do their everyday work in the 2007 version of the software.

Intended Setting:

The company is a small title insurance office. The employees will be able to access the course on any one of five computers that are linked to the Internet. After the course, three of the employees will be working on stand-alone computers. Because of the sensitive nature of the information stored at our office, their computers are not connected to the Internet. We cannot risk viruses or hacking of our files.

Participants:

The learners include six individuals who will be taking part in the mini-course. All employees are adult learners between 30 and 50 years of age. The gender breakdown is 5 women and 1 man. Four of the employees have a high-school diploma, and two have bachelor degrees (both in business). My learners have all expressed great concern about learning to use the new software quickly. The company, however, does not have the budget to send the employees for formal training classes. While the extrinsic motivation of keeping one's job is present in each employee, all also have an intrinsic desire to learn the new software.

Intended Change Expected:

Since all of the learners have been using Word 2003 on an everyday basis, a course in Word itself is not necessary. The participants are all long-time computer users, who should have no problem navigating through my course. As a result, I expect that within a period of time of less than two weeks, the majority of the participants will be using Word 2007 to carry out their everyday work with few, if any, problems.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • create professional-looking documents in Word 2007 with the same facility as currently exhibited in Word 2003
  • locate tools in Word 2007 previously included in Word 2003 in a different order
  • adopt new components included in the 2007 version of the word processing program not available previously
  • choose between prior and new methods of carrying out commands where new methods have been introduced in Word 2007

TASK ANALYSIS

Purpose

Upon completion of this course, participants will be familiar with the changes in Word 2007 that will facilitate transferring their current ability to create professional-looking documents in the program with the same, or greater, efficiency as they currently exhibit with Word 2003. The course will address specific questions submitted by those who will be taking it, rather than attempting to teach every new or re-located feature in Word 2007.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • choose between prior and new methods of carrying out commands where new methods have been introduced in Word 2007
