Mid-Course Recap
So far in this course we have seen the importance of parent/teacher relationships on student outcomes, purpose of communication and obstacles involved.
The benefits include:
- Higher academic achievement
- Increased attendance rates
- Positive student attitudes and behaviors
- Increased student readiness and interest in their work
- Increased parent satisfaction with teachers
- Higher teacher satisfaction ratings
The purposes include:
- Building strong parent/teacher relationships
- Setting high expectations for student achievement
- Collaborating on details specific to a child
The obstacles include:
- Time and schedule constraints
- Misaligned communication expectations and understanding of parent and teacher roles in education
- Language barriers and socio-cultural differences
- Prior negative interactions and negative feelings toward school and teachers
- Lack of trust and openness
Parent/teacher communication has been shown as worth our time and the purposes and obstacles clearly defined.
Looking Forward
It is time to look at solutions.
While effective communication can indirectly have a positive affect on all of the obstacles above by leading to stronger relationships, it will directly affect the bold items above.
👉Teachers are experts at communicating expectations and roles in their classrooms as well as creating trust and openness. We will take these existing skills and expand them to adults.

Moving On
Teachers effectively use pedagogy to set expectations, communicate roles, and build trusting relationships in the classroom. Andragogy is adult learning theory. Using principles of andragogy, teachers can make their communications with parents more effective.
