UNIT 2: Practices and Processes of the WISE environment

Back to Unit One UNIT 1: Inquiry as an Effective Teaching approach and WISE!

Words you need to know before you begin: [- Knowledge integration] click on the word if you need to refresh your memory or haven't heard of the word. Then push the Largeredleft.gif back button to return.

In this unit you will be exploring the WISE program as a student. You will also:

  • identify through a students perspective how WISE uses inquiry activities and assessments.
  • identify through a students perspective how WISE uses technology to help learners and educators create an technology driven
  • inquiry based learning environment.
  • identify and discuss ways that the WISE program provides knowledge integration practices/processes and make noticings about how they support knowledge integration practices/processes.
  • identify and discuss the learning environment and patterns used in WISE and make noticings about it supports student learning.

Exploring WISE from a student perspective

REad through the following sections. After you read through you will be signing into WISE as a student and making observations. Read through Activity A, B, and C. Then answer the discussion questions either while you are still in WISE or after you are finished. Let the journey begin.

ACTIVITY A: The WISE Learning Environment and Patterns

How does this environment:

1. Make thinking visible
2. Make Science accessible
3. help students learn from each other
4. promote a lifelong of learning.

The WISE environment has many opportunties in which all four of these aspects are used. For example, WISE includes hints and evidence pages to help add ideas. WISE also uses patterns throughout their projects. When you are exploring a project, try to identify how WISE provides all four.

Here are examples WISE provides on how they foster this type of learning:

WISE supports the knowledge integration perspective of learning. This has been developed through conducting research on learning, instruction, and partnerships practices. Each project is developed by a WISE design team including pedagogical specialist, scientists, science teachers, and technology designers. This kinds of collaboration allows for the projects to be revised and revisited to always strive for higher levels of learning. In each project they provide opportunities for learners to:

  • diagnose problems
  • critique experiments
  • distinguish alternatives
  • plan investigations
  • revise views
  • research conjectures
  • search for information
  • construct models
  • debate with peers
  • communicate to diverse audiences
  • form coherent arguments.

Soon we will explore some projects from a students' perspective and try to find the ways that WISE allows learners to use the techniques stated above.

You are going to review a project and then discuss the three questions in the discussion space. AS of right now I only have one project set up,How do Earth and Space Plants Grow. WHile you are going through the project, remember to hold onto the two questions below.

-1. How WISE creates a learning environment that makes thinking visible, makes Science accessible, helps students learn from each other, and promotes a lifelong of learning?

-2. How WISE uses knowledge integration practices?

Now lets begin our journey into WISE from a student perspective! Take about 10-20 minutes to review the project while thinking about the above discussion points.

SIGN IN AS A STUDENT WISE.jpg [-WISE as STUDENT] (I recommend that you open this site up in another window, you will be visiting it quite often in this unit and the next.) Sign in as follows:

   1. Fill in your First and Last name.
   2. Gender
   3. Period 1
   4.Create a password
   5. ENTER RKN96F in the Student Registration Code

(WISE encourages that students work in pairs during this whole process)

While you are there remember to think about the two activities above.

Now that you have experienced the WISE learning environment as a student, I would like you to go to the discussion space at the top of this page and answer the questions. After the discussion, Move onto Unit 3.

-1. How WISE creates a learning environment that makes thinking visible, makes Science accessible, helps students learn from each other, and promotes a lifelong of learning?

-2. How WISE uses knowledge integration practices?

-3. Why is the WISE environment an example of inquiry environment, specifically state one way that it provides this type of learning? As of now, would you use WISE within your classroom, why or why not?

Now onto looking at WISE through a teachers eyes:
