This course will help teachers understand the components of collaborative learning, the benefits of using collaborative learning activities within the classroom, and the issues that could arise from the activities. The learners will also gain information on the use of technology within the classroom and how to properly select technology to support learning. Finally, the learners will get a chance to create their own lesson using technology and collaborative learning. This course is comprised of four units: (1) Key components of Collaborative Learning and using Technology, (2) Benefits and Potential Issues with Collaborative Learning and Technology, (3) Creating a Technology Supported Collaborative Learning Activity, and (4) Reflecting on the Activity and Learning Outcomes. Each topic will be covered through various readings, discussions, case studies, analysis, reflection, and creating an activity.

*If you do not have a Google account you will need to create one. We will be using different Google Apps to share our thoughts and assignments*

Performance Objectives

By completing this course you will be able to understand the the benefits and issues of technology supported collaborative learning. You will be able to use this information to design, implement, and reflect on collaborative learning activities created. The goal is to give you confidence in using technology and collaborative learning in your classrooms, and that productive learning does take place in that environment.

Specifically at the end of this course the learners will:

  • Understand the benefits of collaborative learning
  • Understand the role technology can have on collaborative activities
  • Gain information on the process of creating collaborative learning activities
  • Know the roles of the teacher and student during the activities
  • Create a technology supported collaborative learning activity
  • Reflect on the activity and how to improve the outcome

  • Be aware of any potential issues that could occur in technology supported collaborative learning activities, and use that information when creating their own activity.

  • Create a high quality collaborative learning activity, supported by the necessary technological tool that will result in the appropriate learning outcomes.
