Introduction

Welcome!

Why should you learn about Project based Learning? Watch this video to learn what is happening in the world today and why we need to change our style of teaching to better meet students' needs for the future.

Project-based learning, or PBL, is a teaching method that was first introduced in 1921 by Kilpatrick and was termed the Project Method. It is a hands on inquiry driven approach to teaching. It encourages students to solve real world problems with creativity and collaboration. Since we are preparing students for future jobs that have not yet been created, these skills will help students adapt to an ever-changing job market. PBL offers teachers a way to change the ‘cookbook’ style teaching we often see in science classrooms. This mini-course discussed ways to incorporate a unit or two of PBL into your classroom during the year. To learn more about concrete ways to implement PBL into your science class- or any class, really- go through this mini-course.


Prerequisites

  • You need an open mind and a desire to learn. PBL challenges the teacher to take a very different role in the classroom and this can be a little scary at first- but as you learn to work with PBL effectively it will transform you as a teacher.
  • You also need a journal and something to write with. I recommend you decorate your journal and make it your own. This is one journal you will revisit hopefully over and over again!

Mini Course Goal

By the end of this mini course, you will understand how to implement PBLs into your classroom.

Unit 1- What is Project Based Learning, or PBL?

In this unit, you will learn what PBL is and the different roles teachers and students play in this type of learning environment. You will also explore the benefits of PBL in the classroom.

Unit 2- What does PBL look like in the science classroom?

In this unit you will watch a PBL classroom in action and learn how to design a driving question so you can begin to create a PBL module for you class.

Unit 3- How is a PBL classroom assessed?

Why is assessment so important? Here you will learn about the differences between formative and summative assessment and how to implement them effectively in the class. You will also learn what a rubric is and how to create a rubric for your own PBL unit.
