Introduction

There seems to be a buzz word around education currently "problem-based learning". What does that look like in your classroom? Is it something you can accomplish in your classroom? In this mini-course we will discuss what problem-based learning is? Why it is beneficial to students, what it looks like in a math classroom and how you can incorporate it into your classroom with your curriculum.

Unit 1: What is authentic math teaching?

Objectives:

  • Describe what problem based learning is
  • Identify the differences between problem based learning and traditional learning

Unit 2: Examples of authentic math classrooms

Objectives

  • Identify features of authentic teaching in sample mathematics lessons

Unit 3: Incorporating authentic math into your own classroom

Objectives:

  • Identify key features involved in creating an effective authentic lesson
  • Creating a sample lesson using the Common Core Standards
