Focus Objectives
Learners will be able to demonstrate understanding of the history behind Distance Education, along with the different models that have emerged and the benefits that can result from this type of learning given a database of research and resources through discussion posts with peers.
In this lesson, learners will
- Read to understand the history, types and benefits of Distance Education
- Watch how Music Education can be incorporated into a Distance Education model
- Brainstorm different ways in which learners have experienced Distance Education
Activity #1
Read the following pages from Simonson et al's (2012) "Teaching and Learning at a Distance" Chapter 1 and consider what are the advantages to studying at a distance
Read the following article Redesigning the Learning Environment for Distance Education: An Integrative Model of Technologically Supported Learning Environments (Miller & Padgett 1998)

Watch and consider why one would choose to engage with learning music at a distance.

Discuss what you think is the most important facet of Distant Education. Where have you experienced different forms of Distant Education. What did it look like? What have you found to be helpful in your learning?
