Improving Geography with the Help of Google Earth

Overview

Now that you are in your final years of high school you will be asked to answer a number of important questions regarding your future. One of the biggest questions is what college or trade school will you be attending. The answer of this question should not be determined on the name or reputation of the school alone, but on its location as well. Many college students end up relocating to their college town to live in the years after graduation. With this said, my question to you is not which college you want to attend, but where would you like to live and work for the following four years and likely beyond.

This is the opportunity of a lifetime, to pack up and move anywhere in the country you would like with your parent’s approval. As you work your way through these Google Earth based lessons, you will have the opportunity not only to view a few of your favorite locations from above, but also get a better understanding of why some parts of the country maybe more suitable for you.

Driving Question: How does the area we live in affect how we live.
In other words, since you are moving out of your home town to attend a school in a completely other part of the country wouldn’t it make since to have an idea of what day-to-day life in that state would be like? As your work your way through this course you will be given the opportunity to research the socioeconomics of the area surrounding the schools you plan on applying for. Thus, when you finally decide on a college you will be well informed.

Unit One will begin this mini-course by showing you how to install Google Earth. In Unit Two you will be taught how to use Google Earth to locate your house and a few famous locations. Later in Unit three you will get a chance to search for a few of your college choices and view their campuses while learning the locations of various states. You will also have the opportunity to learn a little more about the city/state that your college is located in.

Assessment: This mini course will be graded following the below percentages.
1) Assignments: 40%
2) Discussions: 20%
