Objective
In this section, learners will:
- Create a job aid to improve their parent/teacher communication.
What is a Job Aid?
Everything pictured above is a job aid.
"Job aids are simple, clear instructions on how to do something at work. They can include cheat sheets, memory joggers, one-pagers, performance support tools, direction lists, and much more. Essentially, anything designed to reduce avoidable mistakes at work can be considered a job aid." - TechSmith
Creating a job aid for parent/teacher communication will help you remember and apply the knowledge from this course in your teaching practice.
Creating a Job Aid/Cheat Sheet
Follow these steps to create your cheat sheet. Feel free to check out your classmates' examples below. You can create this on paper or digitally using any program you with which you are comfortable.
1. Gather Information
- Gather the information you need. Your notes on why parent/communication is important to you and on the applications you found for the principles of andragogy will help. Tailor your job aid to what suits you and your teaching practice.
2. Decide what to Include
- You may want to include information about:
- Why improving parent/teacher communication matters to you (to motivate)
- What the purposes of parent/teacher communication are (to focus)
- What you can do to overcome communication obstacles (to focus)
- How to apply andragogical principles to communications (to implement)
3. Lay it out in a Useful Format
- To make your job aid useful, keep all information simple and concise. Use words or images that will quickly trigger your memory and only provide yourself as much detail as you need to complete the job successfully.
4. Make it Beautiful
- If you have something you like looking at, you are more likely to keep it out where you will see it and refer to it often. Taking the time to make your cheat sheet visually appealing will pay off in the long term.
