Visual Thinking Unit 2

Unit 2: Thinking Routines

At the end of this unit, you will understand what thinking routines are and evaluate a variety of routines to determine how these routines can fit into your own learning environment.

Objective: Given an informational website, you will evaluate 4 visual thinking routines by using a rubric.

Implementing these routines into your classroom can greatly support student thinking. As stated before, thinking is not something that can be visibly seen by the students since it takes place inside the mind. These routines can help model the act of thinking for our students.

Lesson 1: Get to Know Visual Thinking Routines

Click the link below to explore what thinking routines are.

1. Watch the video on this page to better understand visual thinking routines: http://www.pz.harvard.edu/projects/visible-thinking

Assessment: Write a reflection that answers the following questions (note, this is a visual thinking routine!)

1. How are the ideas and information presented connected to what you already knew?

2. What new ideas did you get that extended or pushed your thinking in new directions?

3. What is still challenging for you to get your mind around? What wonderings do you still have?

4. Read at least 3 other participants' posts and respond.

Assessment: Use the rubric posted on our class Edmodo page to assess 4 visual thinking routines of your choice. The rubric is attached to the assignment post. After you complete the rubric, select one that you feel you could implement into your classroom if you were asked to do it tomorrow. You do not need to submit your rubric to me. Just make sure you have it open as you reflect and evaluate the routines. Post the routine that you selected with a brief description of why on our Edmodo assignment space called Unit 2 Lesson 2.
