Unit 3: How to Create a 3-Dimensional Unit

Unit 3 Introduction

The purpose of this unit is to be able to create an effective unit plan, utilizing the 5E model or an alternative model discovered through the previous unit. You will first engage in a discussion with your peers about to what extent your classroom may or may not already be running 3-dimensionally. You will then choose a unit that you would like to write a unit plan for, and explore a process that walks you through writing lessons following the 5E model. After this exploration, you will reflect through a discussion with your peers what you think about the 5 tools offered in writing lessons following the 5E model. Finally, you will use the 5E model (or an alternative from the previous unit) to create your unit plan.

Objective 1: Participants will discuss to what extent their classrooms already run 3-dimensionally.

Objective 2: Participants can explore how to create lessons using the 5E model.

Objective 3: Participants can create a unit plan that is aligned to the NGSS, utilizing a teaching model from the previous unit (the 5E model or one of their own choosing).

  1. Discussion (initial) on whether your classroom is already 3-dimensional or not.
  2. Choose a unit to work with from the standards provided.
  3. Analysis of tools provided from the American Museum of Natural History.
  4. Discuss your findings after you analyze the 5 tools.
  5. Create a unit plan of the chosen unit.

The purpose of this discussion is to communicate how you think your classroom may or may not already be running 3-dimensionally. Discuss what you currently do that should remain, and some things you think you will need to change in the future. Objective 1

  1. Visit Google Classroom
  2. Open the discussion post titled "3-Dimensional Classrooms".
  3. Read instructions and complete prompt.

Choose a Unit

The purpose of this section is to allow you to investigate the standards a bit more deeply in your own content area. Once you have gotten the chance to look at the content that will be taught in your content area, you will pick a topic to plan a single unit for. Objective 3

  1. Watch the EdPuzzle titled "NGSS Unit 2 EdPuzzle Video"
  2. Once you have watched the video, pick a topic you would like to create a unit plan for in your content area.
  3. Once you have a topic chosen, choose a current unit you already complete within that topic. For example, topic is Earth's Systems, unit is Plate Tectonics (a unit I currently teach).
  4. Visit Google Classroom and open the discussion question titled "Standards in Your Content Area". Read the instructions and complete the prompt.

Analysis/Discussion of Tools

The purpose of this activity is to introduce you to a step-by-step process that can be utilized when creating lessons using the 5E model. Visit many other locations on the American Museum of Natural History's website for more details. Objective 2

  1. Watch the EdPuzzles titled "AMNH Tool 1, AMNH Tool 2, AMNH Tool 3, AMNH Tool 4, and AMNH Tool 5".
  2. Read through the AMNH webpage and watch the videos on the webpage to supplement the EdPuzzles.
  3. Click through the links that are provided within each tool to better see what each tool is composed of.
  4. In Google Classroom, find the discussion post titled "What Do You Think About the 5 Tools?". Follow the instructions provided and complete the prompt.

Create a 3-Dimensional Unit Plan

The purpose of this assignment is to create a unit plan for your chosen unit, keeping in mind the instructional model you chose (for example 5E) and the 5 tools provided by the American Museum of Natural History. Use whatever unit layout works best for you. It might be a good idea to try to complete some of these tools (especially tool 3) to help organize your thoughts before you begin. Objective 3

  1. Create your unit plan using a 3-dimensional instructional model
  2. Turn your Unit Plans in by uploading them to Google Classroom under the assignment titled "Completed Unit Plans.
