Reaching 90%+ Target Language Use in the World Language Classroom



What is this course all about

This mini course will raise awareness of the need for the increase in the target language in the world language classroom. It will present practical strategies to foster the target language use, and it will interpret the ACTFL, World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and can-do statements: Progress indicators for language learners.

Who should take this course

This course is designed for language educators who want to increase the language use in their world language classroom. Participants will be encouraged to incorporate what they have learned and apply it to their classroom where they work.

What should be know before taking this course

Prerequisites:

• Participants need to be self- motivated and willing to take a risk.

• Participants should know how to use computers and have internet access.

• Participants should have a language classroom.

• Participants need to master the language they teach.

What will be learning through this course

Upon completion of this mini course learners will be able to:

• Interpret The ACTFL, World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and can-do statements: Progress indicators for language learners.

• Elaborate practical strategies to foster the target language use

• Use 10% of the native language (L1)

Unit 1:Why language educator should maximize target language usages?

At the end of this unit learners will be able to:

1 Participants will be able to reflect on prior knowledge.

2. Participants will be able to develop a logic argument on the benefit of staying in the target language recommended by ACTFL.

3. Participants will be able to become more aware of the need for reaching the 90% plus target.

4. Participants will be able to view videos about the use of the target language.

Unit 2:How can language educator be in the target language for at least 90% plus?

At the end of this unit learners will be able to:

1. Participants will be able to be exposed to various strategies to stay in the target language.

2. Participants will be able to watch videos that describe the strategies.

3. Participants will be able to select one strategy that fit best with student’s personality.

4. Participants will be able to practice and implement the strategies in their language classroom.


Unit 3: When educator should use 10% of the native language (L1)

At the end of this unit:

1 Participants will be able to define when to use 10% of native language (L1)

2. Participants will be able to evaluate all of the strategies that you have learned.

3. Participants will be able to implement some strategies to foster target languages use in the language classroom.

4. Participants will be self-assess using the Can-Do Statements.
