Data Analysis for Differentiated Instruction: A mini-course for educators
All students learn differently and have various needs in order to reach their highest individual potential. Differentiated instruction can be a useful tool for maximizing student learning. Kaufeldt (2005) explains:
- Differentiated instruction is defined by the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) as "a form of instruction that seeks to maximize each student's growth by meeting each student where she is and helping the student to progress. In practice, it involves offering several different learning experiences in response to students' varied needs. Learning activities and materials may be varied by difficulty to challenge students at different readiness levels, by topic in response to students' interests, and by students' preferred ways of learning or expressing themselves" (ASCD 2005 as cited in Kaufeldt 2005, p. 2).
As a result of this course, I hope that learners will walk away with better knowledge of how to identify their students' needs and feel confident in being able to provide meaningful activities to increase student learning and enjoyment of learning.
Learners will be able to identify the meaning, goals, and construction of differentiated instruction.
Learners will be able to identify useful data to analyze for implementation into differentiated instruction lessons to increase student scores on assessments.
Learners will be able to analyze identified student data using related computer programs for data analysis when needed.
Learners will be able to design and choose to use appropriate differentiated instruction activities in response to data analysis results.
