Return to: ETAP 623 Spring 2017 | Integrating iPads into the Elementary Classroom

About me

Me and my fiance, Matthew

I graduated from SUNY Cortland in December 2015 with a BA in Mathematics and a BS in Childhood Education. I began this school year as a Building Substitute at a public school in Troy, NY servicing K-5 students. I have just finished up a two-month LOA in one of the 2nd grade classrooms and have recently accepted a maternity leave in a 1st grade classroom, lasting the rest of the school year. I also work every day as part of the school's after school tutoring program. This is my first semester in the CDIT program and I am very excited to continue my educational journey. My goal is to obtain my Professional Teaching Certificate for New York State. When I am not working, I enjoy reading, skiing, and spending time with my family.

My Topic/Purpose

The purpose of this course is to help teachers successfully integrate iPads into the elementary classroom. At the end of this course, the learners will be able to:

  • Identify the different functions of an iPad
  • Describe the benefits of using iPads in the classroom
  • Determine appropriate apps for students' learning needs
  • Create engaging activities using iPads

Needs Assessment and Learner Analysis

1. Instructional Problem: Teachers have insufficient training on iPads and ways they can be integrated into the classroom.

2. The Nature of What is to be Learned: Learners will be taught the different functions of an iPad and how to use it. Learners will then be taught various ways iPads can be integrated into the classroom. Different Apps will be explored, and learners will create their own engaging activity effectively integrating iPads into the classroom.

3. About the Learners: This mini-course is designed to help elementary teachers grades K-5. The learners have little to no experience using iPads and even less have experience teaching with iPads. Although this mini-course is geared towards K-5 teachers, information and apps can be swapped to target older grades.

4. Instructional Content: This mini-course will be broken down into different lessons inside separate units. The first unit will focus on the functions and uses of an iPad. The second unit will focus on the benefits of using and integrating iPads into the classroom. The third unit will be on determining appropriate apps based on the learners' students' needs. The final unit will focus on the learners creating their own activities that incorporate iPads. Each unit will end with a self-check and reflection. Some units will include quizzes, and other have the learners self-assess their progress with the use of rubrics. Learners will use a computer will internet connection to access this mini-course.

5. Explore Instructional Problem/Solution: Because educators lack the training, they struggle successfully integrating iPads into their classrooms. This course will lead these teachers in the right direction by giving them the basic training and information needed to integrate iPads into the classroom.

6. Generate Goals: This mini-course is created so elementary teachers will learn the basics of integrating iPads in the classroom. These teachers will begin to feel comfortable reviewing and determining appropriate apps to use while creating engaging activities that integrate iPads into their classrooms.

Performance Objectives

1. Given an iPad, learners will be able to identify the different functions and uses.

2. The learners will be able to describe in detail at least three benefits of using iPads in the classroom.

3. Given an iPad, learners will be able to determine appropriate apps depending on their students' needs.

4. Learners will be able to create lessons and activities that actively engage students through iPad integration in the classroom.
