Intent of Project

“Education in virtue is the only education which serves the name.” – Plato

Throughout History, and in Cultures all over the world, Education has had two primary goals: to help students "Become Smart and to help them Become Good."

Character Education is the deliberate effort to cultivate virtue. Specifically, the virtue means the good human qualities that are good for the individual person. The influence is profound and cover the whole society and culture. In 21st century, because of the development of technology and economy, there are more and more variations and uncertainties in the environment. Our students are now under the situation full of the overwhelming information and stimulus. It becomes more important for them to have moral sensitivity, judgment, motivation, and action when they encounter the real life problem and moral dilemma. In the other words,our students need character qualities such as diligence, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude in order to do their best in school, become lifelong learners, work hard and succeed in life. They need character qualities such as honesty, respect, and fairness in order the live and work with others. It's a lifelong lesson and basic skill to be successful in the 21st century. Thus, as educators, it's crucial to learn about Character Education and learn the strategies to help our students be equipped both moral and performance character.


The intent of this course is to show educators the knowledge of Character Education and how to effectively integrate it in classroom. For understanding the purpose and principle of Character Education, learners need to be familiar with the theory of moral development and have enough knowledge of the components in moral education.

Topics that will be covered:

  • The theory of Moral development
  • Identifying the main components of moral development
  • Purpose and benefits of Character Education
  • Identifying the principle of effective Character Education
  • Applying Children literature to teach Character
  • The individual notions of Character Education

Needs Analysis

1. Problem: Character Education is a crucial subject in 21st century. Teachers need to have enough knowledge about Character Education and be familiar with the effective principles of teaching students Character.

2. What is to be learned: For being familiar with the purpose and the principle of Character Education, teachers need to know the theory of moral development and the components of character education. Teachers will also learn one strategy to teach character: Character Education through children literature.

3. The Learners: The learners will be K-12 teachers who need the knowledge in how to make effort to cultivate students' Character and facilitate their moral development.

4. Instructional Context: Most activities will occur online and by individual.

5. Exploring the problem and solution: Learners will be encouraged to learn, discuss and reflect on course activities. Learners will also be encouraged to provide added opinion or resource.

6. Goals: For teachers to learn more about the theory and principle of character education and for teachers to be able to integrate the principles into their classroom and teaching.

Performance Objectives

  • Learners will be able to identify the meaning of character education.
  • Learners will be able to identify the effective principles of character education.
  • Learners will be able to identify the meaning of using children literature to teach students character.
  • Learners will be able to identify the benefits of using children literature to teach students character.
  • Learners will be able to evaluate certain children literature which they can apply to Character Education.

Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to help teachers increase their understanding of Character Education and provide the effective principles of accessing Character Education in classroom.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to:
    • State the phrase of moral development
    • Identify the components of moral development
    • Explain the purpose and benefit of character education
    • Identify the effective principles for character education
    • Understand the relationship between children literature and character education
    • Apply children literature to teach students good character

  • In order to reach outcomes, students must know/learn to:
    • Understand what the main theories of moral development
    • Understand what the phrase of moral development
