# Basic Number Properties Unit Four

## Maintaining Equality

When working with equations you can manipulate the equation any way you want as long as you follow one simple rule.

To maintain the equality of the equation you must treat each side equally.

10 + 2 = 12

if you multiply both sides by 3 you get

3(10 + 2) = 3 * 12

Using the distributive property i get 30 + 6 = 3 * 12

Notice that 30 + 6 is equal to 3 * 12, I have maintained the equality of the equation.

This works with addition as well:

2*6 = 4 + 8

2 + (2*6) = 2 + 4 + 8

Notice that both sides started out as equal to 12 and when I added two to both sides they now equal 14, I have again maintain equality.

Now we will put it all together in the next unit.
