Office 365
In order to view the presentations you will need Office 365. All SUNY Albany students are set up with Office 365, however you may need to download the application if you do not already have it set up on your computer. Your username is your UAlbany email address and your password should be the same as the one you use to access MyUAlbany.
Reflection Journal

You will need a 1-subject spiral bound or composition notebook to use for personal journal entries.

Overview: The Benefits of Yoga and Meditation

For the Body

- increases body awareness, balance, and coordination
- develops core strength
- improves posture and alignment
- promotes flexibility and develops strength
- reduces tension in the body and promotes better sleep
- strengthens the immune system and improves recovery from illness
- increases circulation and improves digestion
- balances energy levels (high or low)

For the Mind

- relieves stress and reduces anxiety
- improves concentration and focus
- promotes memory, recall, and other thinking processes
- stills the mind allowing us to be present in the moment
- increases awareness so that we are less reactive and more mindful of thoughts, words, and actions

For the Spirit

- builds confidence and self-esteem
- supports character development
- improves emotional intelligence
- develops discipline and self-control
- strengthens respect for others and themselves
- fosters a sense of universal connectivity in the world
- encourages social and environmental awareness and repsonsiblity

Unit One: Basic Yoga Asanas


Unit Objectives:

- Students will become familiar with the names, images, and benefits of basic yoga poses
- Students will become familiar with how each pose feels for them
- Students will reflect on their experience of each pose


Lesson One - Standing Poses


Lesson Objectives:

-Students will learn the names, images, and benefits of various standing poses
-Students will perform each of the standing poses presented
-Students will reflect on their experience of each standing poses presented
-Students will practice a standing yoga sequence once per day for one week


Lesson Activities:

Activity One: View the presentation and make notes about your impressions and experience with each of the different poses, and whether or not they worked for you in your Reflection Journal.


Activity Two: Download the "Standing Yoga Sequence". Practice the sequence on your own 1 x day for 1 week (feel free to revisit the presentation for directions), and write in your Reflection Journal each day. File:Standing Pose Sequence.pdf


Activity Three: Go back and review your Reflection Journal entries for this Lesson and write a 500-word summary on the course discussion board for "Standing Poses".



Lesson Two - Seated Poses


Lesson Objectives:

-Students will learn the names, images, and benefits of various seated poses
-Students will perform each of the seated pose presented
-Students will reflect on their experience of each seated pose presented
-Students will practice a seated yoga sequence once per day for one week

-Students will reflect on their experience with implementing each mindfulness and meditation exercises presented


Lesson Activities


Activity One: View the presentation and write your initial impressions of the mindfulness and meditation exercises demonstrated in the videos, and whether or not they will work for your students, on the course discussion board for "Mindfulness and Meditation in the Classroom".


Activity Two: Select one of the mindfulness and meditation exercises from the presentation. Implement the mindfulness and meditation exercise(s)in your classroom 1 x day for 1 week, and write in your Reflection Journal each day.


Activity Three: Go back and review your Reflection Journal entries for this Lesson and write a 500-word summary on the course discussion board for "Mindfulness and Meditation in the Classroom".
