About me

My boys and me!

I am an Air Force veteran, and a high school Earth Science teacher. I have been teaching at my district for two years, and am starting my third year. I really enjoy seeing the students reach the “Ah-Ha” moment during exploration in class. This is why I became a teacher. I work very hard to ensure that all of my students understand the material that I am working to portray. I am currently enrolled in the CDIT program at the University of Albany, and I cannot wait to see what these last few classes can teach me! I am a wife, mother, learner, explorer, and lover of all animals! I spend a majority of my time outside doing something, and I am not one to sit for very long.

Problem Statement

As you walk around in public today, children are all carrying phones, tablets, iPods, and other electrical devices that connect them to the world around them. Children today know how to manipulate a smart phone and all of the apps that they download on a daily basis with ease. Some students today gather information during class by utilizing their phones in the midst of a traditional classroom setting. Technology is a part of our daily lives, so there is no surprise that technology has entered the classrooms, therefore changing the procedures and infrastructure of the learning environment (Robertson, 2007; Voogt et al., 2011; Wen-Yu Lee & Tsai, 2012). There have been recent changes to the core curriculum standards in numerous disciplines of education in New York State, with science on the forefront. These newer standards amplify the need for students to synthesize and analyze the information that they collect, most often utilizing a computer. These recent changes have yet to come into effect for secondary science, but the increase integration of technology into the classroom has already pushed its way into the curriculum. The question now is, how do you incorporate technology into the classroom to ensure engagement and success?
