Unit 3 - Design a Formative Assessment Plan

Unit Objective

  • Prepare a formative assessment plan for an existing lesson or unit


Introduction

In this last module you will generate ideas for formative assessment and revise a current lesson plan to incorporate more formative elements. In Unit 2 many different examples of formative assessment were given. You may still be wondering how you will have time in your busy day to expand and include more student interaction than you already do. Please remember that developing formative assessment will take time and you can not be expected to begin with every lesson all at once.


Formative Assessment Plan

For this activity, you will need another lesson plan example. You may use the one from the reflection in Unit 2 or you may choose a different one. Think of the different ideas you wrote down in Unit 1 and 2 to incorprorate formative assessment in your lessons. You may see elements that are close but may need further development. For example, you may have an activity that includes a writing assignment. You may have handed it back with a grade or a check or a star. To incorporate more formative elements, you need to add meaningful feedback. Require the students to turn it in before the final due date so you can provide feedback and ideas on how they can improve their work. Remember that students may not be used to this idea so you will have to encourage participation. In this activity you will develop a full formative assessment plan for a lesson or unit. Look at the objectives and think about different ways you can assess the students. You can consider short or long term projects that may have a rubric to accompany them. It may be helpful to discuss your formative assessment plan with another educator or school administration. Using formative assessment does not mean you remove all summative assessments as there are times they are effective and necessary.

1. Start with your existing lesson and review the plan to assess students.

2. Form ideas to add or change things to include more formative assessment and review the ideas from Unit 2 as necessary. A link back to Unit 2 is found below.

3. Review your objectives as they relate to assessment.

4. Revise the lesson or unit based on your ideas for formative assessment.

5. Put your plan into practice. Remember that it may take students some time to get used to a different assessment plan.


After Implementation

After you try our your plan in class, you may want to think about how it went. Here are some questions you can reflect on.

1. Did the students benefit from this approach? What was their response?

2. Did my plan provide the intended effect and results? Why do I think that?

3. What changes should I make for the next class?

4. What other lessons can I revise to include more formative elements?
