Overview

This unit helps you identify if PBIS is a good fit for you and your students.

At the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Identify strengths and weaknesses within your classroom;
  • Identify ares where PBIS can be used with your student;
  • Determine if you should implement PBIS.

  • The students in your school can be broken into three different parts. The picture to the right provides a visual.

The green section indicates interventions for everyone. This includes things such as school-wide PBIS.

The yellow section indicates interventions for some students, which are at-risk. This includes things such as mentor programs or check-in, check-out systems.

The red sections indicates interventions for individual students. This typically includes a Behavior Intervention Plan and some type of therapy.

Now it's time to reflect on your current population of students and your classroom environment. Examples are given after some reflective prompts to guide your thinking.

  • What works for your classroom? How do you know it works?

Example: Students have adopted the classroom routine of entering the classroom everyday, grabbing their instructional materials, and sitting in their seat.

  • How do your students generally behavior?
  • Are there any situations where students do not behave appropriately? Do you know why they repeat that behavior?

Example: Students pack up their materials early and do not engage in the end of the lessons.

  • Have you tried any strategies in attempt to improve their behavior?

Example: Yes, I have tried exit-tickets, but they have not seemed to work.

  • Do you tend to focus on negative behavior rather than the positives?

Example: Yes, I get caught up prompting the students to keep their materials out, that I do not have time to reward the students who did not try to pack up.

  • Do you have any students that you would place in the red or yellow section in the pyramid above? If so, for what reason?

Create a list of areas where you can potentially use PBIS with your students.

To create a list, first create a file on google docs. Once you have created your list, make it a shareable link and post it here so fellow students may view your list.
