Welcome to my Mini-Course!

This page will provide you the links to navigate this course as well as a reference page. This 3-unit course should take approximately 5 weeks depending on your own pacing. I personally designed to course with the intended purpose of 5 weeks to give proper time for project creation amid the mass information intake.

My Purpose for My Mini-Course

For my mini-course, I will be covering the different ways we can incorporate technology into early childhood classrooms. With technology being everywhere nowadays, it is important to follow the times and take advantage of it in our schools and child care centers as well. This is a topic I have experience in and will also be delving into some research to back up my own knowledge and some new information as well. In this course I also will be including in two of the three sections how to show families and educators the positives to technology in education as technology in early childhood is still frowned upon at times. Knowledge is a powerful tool that should be shared for the best possible care of each child at home and in school.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Learners will be able to explain at least two of the four guiding principles of technology in the classroom.
  2. Learners will discover at least one new classroom technology.
  3. Learners will be able to explain why at least two different classroom technologies are beneficial.
  4. Learners will be able to craft an informational newsletter to parents on the benefits of technology in the classroom.

Needs Assessment

What is the need?

  • Technology has only grown more and more over the years. With technology being everywhere nowadays, it is important to follow the times and take advantage of it in our schools and child care centers as well.
  • Public schools and private schools from grades kindergarten to graduate studies have all been way ahead of childcare centers on the integration of technology in the classroom and the many tools being made specifically for educators.
  • It is time childcare centers catch up to the outside world in using technologies inside their classrooms to ensure an education for their students that is current and relevant to the times.

Who are the participants?

  • The participants will be educators, likely early childhood educators who work with children ages 2 to 5.

Gathering information

  • Although technology usage has begun to plateau rather than grow is because, “... parts of the population have reached near-saturation levels of adoption of some technologies. Put simply, in some instances there just aren’t many non-users left.” (Hitlin, 2018).

Results/Summary

  • We live in a society that now has families of almost all socioeconomic status having some access to technology within their homes. Technology is virtually everywhere nowadays and a part of many people’s everyday life (Hitlin, 2018). We can not continue to keep technology outside of our schools and then say that we have prepared students for life outside school.

Performance-Based Objective Development

Learning Objective Performance-Based Objective
Learners will be able to explain at least two of the four guiding principles of technology in the classroom. From Section One, learners will be introduced to the four guiding principles of technology and given a deeper explanation on each of the four guiding principles. Also in Section One, learners will be discovering why technology has a place as a beneficial tool in childcare centers. Learners will show their understanding by completing a write-up at the end of Section One.
Learners will discover at least one new classroom technology. Learners will be introduced to a total of six classroom technologies within Section 2 & 3. Both sections give each technology a quick overview and a deep dive on that technology. Learners have multiple assignments based on the technologies discussed; therefore, I can see that they learned about a new technology through their assignments in Sections 2 & 3.
Learners will be able to explain why at least two different classroom technologies are beneficial. Learners will be introduced to a total of six classroom technologies within Section 2 & 3. Both sections give each technology a quick overview and a deep dive on that technology, including the benefits of that technology. Learners have a short answer write-up in Section 2 where they show their understanding of the benefits of one technology based on the technologies introduced in that section. Learners also have a short answer write-up in Section 3 where they show their understanding of the benefits of one technology based on the technologies introduced in that section.
Learners will be able to craft an informational newsletter to parents on the benefits of technology in the classroom. Learners will be introduced to the basics of crafting a newsletter for families and have practice in creating a newsletter. The same introduction to newsletters lesson will be displayed in both Section 2 and Section 3 before the final assignment of the section. The final assignment in Section 2 and Section 3 is to create a one page newsletter based on the technologies introduced in that section. The learners will show their skill and understanding in the final project in Section 2 and Section 3.
