Teaching Science through Inquiry


"If a single word had to be chosen to describe the goals of science educators during the 30-year period that began in the late 1950s, it would have to be INQUIRY." (DeBoer, 1991, p. 206).

Inquiry-based teaching, central to the National Science Education Standards and the Benchmarks for Science Literacy, should not be an isolated occurrence, but a comprehensive and ongoing approach. However, many teachers hesitate to teach science through inquiry because they did not learn this way themselves, when they were students or during their preparation to become teachers.

In this website, you will get to know more about how to teach science through inquiry. The theory and the hands-on projects are provided to help you to get started in your own teaching easily.Whether you have already experimented with inquiry teaching and want to enhance your practice, or are new to the approach and want to know how to make it work, this workshop will help you understand the process and how it benefits students, and give you strategies to use in your classroom.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, course participants should be able to:

  • Understand the concept of Science Inquiry;
  • Get to know the procedure of doing inquiry in science teaching;
  • Understand the principles and procedure of developing materials that promote inquiry in science teaching;
  • Analysis the given lesson plans and projects that exemplifies improvements of using inquiry;
  • Design the inquiry-based science lesson plans or projects.
  • Choose to use inquiry method in the classroom teaching or project designing;
  • Choose to advocate the inquiry-based teaching method in discussions with peers.
