Overview and Purpose

The ability to manage classroom behavior is one of the top concerns for every new teacher and can often lead to a teacher quitting after their first year teaching. Poor classroom management can also hinder learning. If a teacher is unable to manage a classroom, it is almost certain that nothing they’re going to do will be successful. What if teachers could create a system that provides rewards to students who engage in desired classroom behavior? Teachers can better manage their classrooms by implementing a classroom token economy.

• Make connections between the world economy and the classroom token economy system
• Compare and contrast different token economy systems and evaluate the use of each after watching short video clips and completing a venn diagram
• Identify at least 3 negative behaviors exhibited by learners and 3 desired behaviors instructors wish to see in the classroom after careful analysis
• Design and implement an action plan for introducing and incorporating a token economy system in the classroom
• Monitor student progress, adjust the token economy system to better meet needs of learners, and reflect on their implementation and success in achieving system goals

Identify two specific uses of the token economy system in the classroom Analyze the purpose of the token economy system by answering response questions based on three articles Make connections between the world economy and the classroom token economy system Identify three common problems with the token economy system in the classroom and reflect on how you might overcome them Identify the seven elements of a token economy system Identify at lest one way to use the token economy system to meet the needs of your classroom and learners

Lesson 2: Token Economy in Practice
Objectives: By the end of this lesson participants will be able to... Compare and contrast examples of the uses of the token economy in a venn diagram after watching four short videos Identify two types of “tokens” that can be used in the classroom

Unit 2: How can I design, implement, and modify my own token economy system?

Lesson 1: Designing an Effective Token Economy System
Objectives: By the end of this lesson participants will be able to… Conduct a basic needs assessment Generate a list of at least 3 negative behaviors exhibited by learners and at least 3 desired behaviors you wish to see in the classroom. Create an action plan for implementing a classroom token economy system.

Lesson 2: Implementing a Token Economy System
Objectives: By the end of this lesson participants will be able to… Create their token economy by completing the action plan template and a final outline letter to parents Make at least one modification to meet the needs of their individual learners Reflect on the implementation of their token economy system
