Introductory Activity

Follow the link below to a video, watch the video below and answer the following questions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAJ-e4s-cNc&t=34s

  1. When given directions on how to put something together, do you prefer pictures over written directions?
  2. When someone is lecturing, do you create pictures in your mind?
  3. If you are driving on a trip, do you prefer looking at a map rather than reading turn-by-turn directions or hearing spoken directions?

If you answered that you prefer pictures, maps, and think in images to these questions, you probably feel most comfortable with the Visual Learning style!

Visual learning is the first learning style in Neil Fleming's VARK model. Visual learners learn better and are better able to process information when they can see it in front of them.

Characteristics of the Visual Learning Style

When we hear the word visual we often think of it relating to seeing or sight. This is true of visual learners. These learners think in pictures and detail and have vivid imaginations. However, there are many other characteristics of visual learners that separate them from those preferring other learning styles. Some of these characteristics can include:

  • organizing thoughts by writing them down
  • well organized
  • like to read and show intense concentration while reading (Prefer reading rather than listening to a story)
  • remember better by seeing charts, diagrams, etc.
  • good memory for faces but forget names
  • attention to details

Accommodations for Visual Learners

Being that visual learners perceive and process information visually there are some ways you can adapt your lessons, or organize material to best fit this learning style. Some of these strategies include:

Tips for studying for Visual Learners, according to Cowley College.
  • use of mind maps
  • provide handouts for lessons
  • allow students to doodle
  • use colored highlighters to annotate readings and notes
  • use maps, charts, diagrams, timelines, and lists
  • use study cards or flashcards
  • written directions rather than oral instructions
  • Microsoft Sway
  • Google Sites
Mind maps are a fun, creative way for visual learners to take notes. It can even serve as a project idea for many classes!
Infographics can be a great tool to help students visualize statistics and data.
Ways for visual learners to work best!
