Course Overview

The presence of technology in the classroom has increased over the years. This has lead to the growth of digital media in the classroom, and has transformed education. By making access to information easier for us, there are plenty of ways to enhance the current curriculum at your district. However, it must only be incorporated if it meets the needs of the learners. Knowing what digital media is, how and when when to incorporate digital media to enhance curriculum,and getting past the barriers of change can provide students with; the resources they need, the opportunities to build and apply complex thinking skills, and the opportunity for engaging discussions within and between students.

1. Define digital media.
2. Distinguish the purpose of digital media.
3. Compare the pros and cons of incorporating digital media.
4. Analyze and evaluate characteristics of digital media.
5. Create a lesson incorporating digital media that supports current curriculum.

UNIT 1: What is Digital Media?

Learning Goal: Define digital media
Unit Objectives:
The participant will define media.
The participant will define key terms related to digital media.
The participant will identify types of digital media.

UNIT 2: Getting Past the Barriers

Learning Goal: Compare the pros and cons of incorporating digital media
Unit Objectives:
The participant will distinguish barriers to incorporating digital media.
The participant will explore suggestions to overcome barriers.
The participant will suggest ways he/she can incorporate digital media.

UNIT 3: The Way We Teach

Learning Goal: Distinguish the purpose of digital media
Unit Objectives:
The participant will examine critical skills of student expression.
The participant will reflect upon current teaching practices.
The participant will examine strategies that facilitate learning with digital media.

UNIT 4: Selecting Digital Media

Learning Goal: Analyze and evaluate characteristics of digital media
Unit Objectives:
The participant will identify steps in selecting digital media.
The participant will explore criteria of effective digital media.
The participant will suggest digital media platforms that could be used in his/her classroom.

UNIT 5: Your Turn

Learning Goal: Create a lesson incorporating digital media that supports current curriculum
Unit Objectives:
The participant will analyze elements of incorporating digital media that relate to personal curriculum.
The participant will align digital media options to state and Common Core standards.
The participant will plan and implement a lesson that incorporates digital media within 1 month of course end.
