Welcome to Integrating Choice into the Classroom!

This course will focus on how you can include choice in your lesson plans and curriculum. I am an art teacher and will therefore have a focus on art in this course, however, these methods can be applied to any subject area. When students are given the chance to make choice about their learning they are more engaged and feel ownership over their learning.

Overview and Purpose

This course will examine some of the misconceptions about choice-based learning, while learning about the benefits and challenges of choice-based curriculum. Learners will complete quizzes, watch videos, and review lesson plans. For the quizzes you will receive immediate feedback, for any other feedback I suggest working in groups so that you can discuss differing opinions with colleagues.

Performance Objectives

1. Learners will be able to explain the benefits and difficulties of creating, and implementing, choice-based lessons from memory without any aids by the end of this course. (Unit 1)

2. Learners will be able to identify the most important aspects of a lesson when reviewing a lesson plan until they have pared down the lesson to the most crucial parts. (Unit 2)

3. Learners will modify, and design their own, lessons to be more choice-based with the provided materials until they feel they have created a successful choice- based lesson. (Unit 3)
