Hi! Welcome to my mini-course on "Enhancing Cultural Awareness in Classrooms of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language". Destinated for the ultimate question โ€œWhat makes up teachig effectiveness in second language learning?โ€, the mini-course addressed here is to explore explicit and implicit instructions on enhancing cultural awareness that can bolster the effectiveness of learning Chinese as a second language. This course is formated as:

  • Asynchronous Learning Modules: Each unit consists of recorded lectures, readings, interactive content, and activities that can be completed at the participant's own pace.
  • Interactive Components: Discussion boards, peer review sessions, and reflective journals facilitated through an online learning management system (LMS).
  • Assessment: A combination of automated quizzes for immediate feedback, self-assessment and projects for in-depth evaluation.
  • Technology Use: Utilization of common digital tools accessible for delivering content and facilitating interaction.

I design this course to equip Chinese language teachers with:

  • a clear understanding of WHAT makes the significance of cultural loads embedded in common expressions;
  • some deep insights into WHY fostering cultural awareness is essential for second language learning;
  • more practical strategies and metacognitive approaches to HOW to improve cultural awareness within Chinese formulas context.

  • A Contributor: to meet with "great minds" (feel free to Think Differently casue great minds don't always think alike) to form a collaborative learning community
  • A Creator: to innovate some classical ideas via "teaching through culture" instead of "teaching about culture".
  • An Artist: to change your classroom into the exact place of practising Teaching Art.
  • A Magician: to facilitate and scaffold your students into the authentic world of language learning.

The final project is to design a curriculum enhancing cultural awareness in language teaching classrooms.

To reach the EFFECTIVENESS of this mini-course, your efforts are greatly appreciated if you are well-equipped with a willing heart to:

  • Read materials and connect
  • Watch videos and reflect
  • Engage discussion and collaborate
  • Employ in practice and share
  • Make mistakes and modify
  • THINK as a designer

Needs Assessment

The Effectiveness of Second Language Learning

The needs analysis for this mini-course identifies critical gaps among Chinese language teachers in integrating cultural nuances effectively into their instruction, particularly concerning Situation Bound Utterances (SBUs) essential for conveying cultural subtleties. Therefore, the mini-course aims to fill knowledge, skills, and attitudinal gaps by enhancing theoretical understanding and practical application of cultural concepts in language teaching. It is designed to transform educators' perspectives, encouraging them to view cultural integration as a core component of language education, thereby improving both the engagement and the effectiveness of their teaching. By the end of the course, teachers will be adept at creating a more immersive and culturally rich learning environment for their students.
