ENL instruction requirements.
Stand alone instruction is a class taught by a certified ESOL instructor. ELLs will participate in a class that is focused solely on building language skills (as well as developing other social, emotional, or cultural skills and knowledge). The purpose of this class is to explicitly teach English to ELLs at a level that is appropriately aligned with their current proficiency.
Integrated ENL instruction is a class that ideally combines both content and language instruction. The purpose of this class is to provide students with extra support during whole group instruction. This can be either a co-taught class (ENL and content area teacher) or a content area class taught by an instructor with dual certification.
The instruction and staff requirements are reiterated in the document below. This visual is provided by the NYS department of education.
