Overview and Purpose

With the emergence of technology in nearly every aspect of education in the 21st century, teachers may feel overwhelmed. There are numerous programs, apps, and devices, that are emerging trying to establish themselves as a vital part of the classroom. Flashcards have been a staple of studying key vocabulary or concepts in preparation for summative assessments. Some weaknesses of having students create flashcards can include: that it is time-consuming, materials needed, can easily be misplaced, may not be done correctly. This is certainly not a complete list but often some issues that may occur in a K-12 setting. With the introduction of mobile technology in the past twenty years, smartphones can be able to replace bulky flashcards with the use of the app Quizlet.

Needs Assessment

In this course, you will learn how to effectively use the program Quizlet as a study tool to help prepare students for summative assessments. This course is intended for all K-12 educators who have access to technology in the classroom or have a population of students who own smartphones or other mobile devices. This course can be beneficial to any educator. Ideally, you will exit this course with another tool that you may use to help foster learning and test-readiness for your students.

Performance Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Create an account/profile and link it to their classroom
  • Create flashcards, diagrams, and use games such as Quizlet Live
  • Track the progress of the students including time spent studying and accuracy
  • Understand ways this website can be used in the classroom/at home

Essential Prerequisites: Understanding of concepts, procedures, and principles related to:

  • Importance of teaching with vocabulary
  • Preparing students for summative assessments
  • Understanding of technology in regards to computers, the internet, and the mobile app.
