Strategies for Working With Students with Autism
In this unit, you will learn a variety of strategies to use when working with students with autism. You will decide which strategies you believe will be the most effective and which ones you believe will be the hardest to implement. You will create a poster that displays ten or more strategies you can use with working with students with autism and examples on how you could use them in your classroom. You will share this poster with your peers and will discuss strategies you have actually used before.
Unit Learning Objectives
After this unit, you will be able to:
- List at least 10 strategies you can use when working with students with autism
- Provide examples on how these strategies could be implemented in your classroom
- Decide which strategies would be the most beneficial
- Decide which strategies would be the hardest to implement
Unit Activities

2. Create a poster that highlights at least ten (10) strategies that could be used when working with students with autism.
- On your poster, you must provide an example next to the strategy on how you would use this in your classroom. For example, if you chose "Maintain consistency" as a strategy, an example could be that you would provide each student with a daily schedule so they are aware of what their day entails
- Feel free to use graphics and colors to make your poster visually stimulating!
- You can use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Paint, or any other software to create your poster. You could even create your poster on actual poster board and take an image of it.
3. Upload your poster or image of your poster in the discussion area so that your peers can see!
4. Answer the following questions in the discussion area after you upload your poster:
- Which strategies do you believe will be the most effective when working with students with autism? Why?
- Which strategies do you believe would be the least effective or hardest to implement when working with students with autism? Why?
- If you have worked with students with autism before, have you ever used any of these strategies? If so, which ones? Were they effective?
- Are there any strategies that you have used and found effective that weren't listed on the websites provided? Please share with your peers!
