So why do inquiry experiments lend themselves well to data intensive lesson plans? Watch the video below that depicts a classroom in Colorado and how the teacher includes data intensive analysis and construction in the lesson.

Inquiry based activities give students the opportunity to solve authentic problems that are relevant to them. There are many ways data intensive media can be incorporated into inquiry activities. Having students collect data, test their hypothesis, and record results is a great way to get students thinking about data and what that data means. When students are actively involved in inquiry activities that have meaning to them, they will be able to better analyze the data and create data intensive media. Utilizing technology to assist students in creating this media also helps to connect to students who are using technology at a high rate. Read the following article to help you get a better idea of how to create authentic inquiry activities.

Work Period

Select an inquiry activity, such as a lab or project, that you will re-design to include the analysis of data intensive documents and creation of data intensive documents using technology. You may also design a completely new activity if you would like. If you do not have access to technology create a lesson/unit plan that centers around the analysis of these documents to prepare students to create them by hand. This can be a single activity that stretches across multiple days or a culmination of individual lessons that scaffold up to having students create data intensive documents. Use the discussion space to post your lesson ideas. You may use any format of a lesson plan you wish, as this is for you to take back into the classroom with you.

Summary/Conclusion

Hopefully this mini-course gave you new ideas for how to better engage your students with data intensive media. Being able to interpret and create these documents is essential for students to achieve science literacy. There are questions we can ask students, ways to organize information, and digital platforms that we can utilize to enhance students' understanding of these documents. Your completed lesson for this unit should be one that you can take with you and build on as time progresses to help your students understand data intensive media.
