This final unit will bring together what you have learned about aspects of research, research skills, digital media literacy and scholarly articles and give you a chance to decide how you might teach these same skills to students in school. The skills you have learned will help you in your research and navigating digital sources, and a great way to reinforce any newly learned information is to teach it to others. If you can explain, model and build research skills with students, then that means you have mastered much of what was taught. Teachers are the best role models and they can play a huge role in developing these skills in students, thus giving them a better chance at success with research based activities, and in reality, many activities in school require searching the internet and using digital sources. As schools move to more hybrid and distance learning models, the techniques learned in this course may become even more important to help students navigate sources in the online world. The skills learned can also help teachers that are starting out with online teaching, research and learn the best strategies for their own classrooms.


The research and digital media skills learned so far were meant to further your understanding of how research is conducted in the 21st century. Digital literacy is becoming an essential skill for research, but these skills can carry over into other areas that will help students succeed in school. The skills learned could be very beneficial to students if teachers can find a way to model effective research skills and incorporate lessons that give students the opportunity to practice research. Watch the video in the following link. This video reviews some of the strategies digital media literacy skills used for research that you learned about in the previous units. The video also explains how educators can teach students different tips, tricks, strategies and skills that can help them better understand digital sources and how to research for them.

In this last unit your task will be to create a lesson that helps increase students' research skills and models effective research strategies.

What aspects were the same and what was different?

Each teacher has their own teaching strategies, but they all have a basic system when it comes to teaching research skills to students. Teaching research skills will inevitably incorporate digital literacy because to be an effective researcher, one must know how to navigate the digital world to find information. Every class you have will be different and will be filled with students that have various needs and strengths, thus the more strategies you have, the better chance you have at teaching research skills to students. The following videos explain research strategies for students and how teachers can incorporate them into lessons. If you recall the webpage by Kathleen Morris (here is the link[2]), she describes 50 different techniques for adding digital media and research skills in the classroom. The following videos add onto that topic and you can use these videos and webpages to start developing your own ideas for a lesson or strategy you can use in your own classroom.

Using what you have learned about research skills and navigating digital sources, create an authentic activity that can help model and transfer the skills you have learned to someone else. One of the best strategies for remembering is teaching information to someone else. If you can teach it, then you must have a good mastery of the topic. Your activity can be geared towards students in the form of a lesson plan or activity, but you could also create a video, PowerPoint presentation or any other activity that will benefit others. After you complete your activity, upload it to the discussion page where both myself and others can add feedback. As new activities are developed and refined, educators and researchers will have another place online to access information that can help them more effectively carry out research and navigate various digital media sources.
