What are Accommodations & Testing Modifications?
While the two words sound similar, they have different meanings.
Accommodations are changes in how a student accesses information and demonstrates learning. Accommodations do not substantially change the instructional level, content, or performance criteria.
Testing Modifications are changes made to the testing process or to the content of the assessment itself that may change, lower, or reduce learning expectations.

How to Create the Accommodations and Testing Modification Section of an Individualized Education Program
Decisions about which accommodations and testing modifications to use is very individualized and should be made for each student by that student's IEP team. It is vital for every member of each student's IEP team to be well informed about accommodations and modifications as the IEP is a legal document. The team needs to include the student and parents, general and special educators, and any support personnel who are needed to help the student use an accommodation - such as speech and language clinicians, physical and occupational therapists, and school psychologists.
Students can play a significant role in choosing and using accommodations and testing modifications. For students with disabilities, understanding their disabilities and learning self-advocacy strategies are critical for success in school. Students need to know what accommodations and testing modifications are possible. Then, based on knowledge of their personal strengths and limitations, they need to select accommodations and testing modifications that might be useful for them. The more input students have in their own IEP, the more likely it is that they will actually use the accommodations.
