Unit 1: What is SMART Notebook 11

Learning objective:

  • At the end of this unit you will be able to recall the uses of SMART Notebook 11.


  • SMART Notebook is used in conjunction with SMART Boards (pictured to the right).

Why should we use SMART notebook or SMART boards?

Technology has flooded our daily lives in the past decade and education has seen a new wave in the technology we utilize. Teachers now have access to laptops, tablets, smart boards, document readers, and a variety of new software all designed to help students learn. The uses for each of these technologies differ depending on the lesson and what teachers want students to do.

I decided to focus my course on SMART notebook because it is a program that works with SMART boards, which have quickly replaced dry erase boards in classrooms across the United States. “For teachers, the use of the SMART Board uses technology that many students are familiar with already and helps bridge the difference between learning styles, abilities, prior knowledge, and interest levels that exist within any group of children.” (Giles, 2011, pg. 2).

SMART boards also make it easier for teachers because they can do so much more than a white board. They work as projectors, white boards (where you can draw and erase), and computer since your computer screen is projected onto the board. You are able to access everything you could on your computer through a smart board via the touch screen.

The interaction element has been a big reason for the success of these boards in education. “The SMART Board provides teachers and students with a whole new interactive learning environment to share ideas, information, images, animations, audio or video. Learning is much more powerful if it is multimodal and the SMART Board supports several different learning styles - visual-spatial, auditory and kinesthetic (SM/4/^7-Technologies, 2004). Young students are highly motivated when content is presented on a SMART Board. It increases their enjoyment by being physically involved touching and moving objects and by the size of the screen which makes images large enough for everyone to see.” (Mowbray and Preston, 2008, pg. 2). SMART boards can provide teachers with the tool to create interactive lessons for their students.

I also want to take a second to make some clarifications. When I say SMART board, I am referring to the brand SMART and their smart boards. When I say smart boards, I am generalizing all smart boards, which include Promethium boards. The SMART Notebook 11 class is designed for SMART boards and not Promethium boards. I have not worked with Promethium boards but would like to at some point.
