UNIT OBJECTIVES

1. The learner will analyze elements of virtual field trips relating to classroom objectives.

2. The learner will align virtual field trip topics to common core and state standards.

3. The learner will research and implement a virtual field trip into their curriculum 3 months of course end.

Unit Overview

You have to research and plan your virtual field trip no different than you would going on a traditional field trip. The difference is you will be using your classroom or school room in order to facilitate the learning experience. You will also possibly be using money that is allocated for field trips. This is why you want to understand not only what you are looking for in a quality program, but how to gain access to the additional resources that align best with your curriculum. In this unit we will complete our look at identifying virtual field trip programs and how to implement them into your curriculum.

1. Go to the unit 3 discussion area and enter any remaining unanswered questions you carried over from Unit 2.

2. Then enter your three topics you would like to research further for possible implementation.

Mini-Lecture

The integration of virtual field trips into the curriculum may seem overwhelming at first. However, once you familiarize yourself with the technology and work with a provider you will find that it becomes easier.

Read this Pep Talk to learn how one teacher used virtual lessons in multiple ways to address his curriculum.

Exploration

If we return to the Scholastic pilgrim virtual tour we visited in Unit 1 we can analyze the standard based lesson plans.

Let's take a look: Grades 3-5 Standard based lesson plans-Scholastic

Remember your visit with the cute otters?

Take a moment to revisit the Monterey Bay Aquarium and look at the available curriculum guides.

1. Scroll down below the camera screen until you come to the sea otter curriculum.

2. How can you fit these into your curriculum.

In most cases virtual programs only share their supplemental curriculums and guides once you have registered for their programs. This is another reason why it is important to start an open communication with a virtual field trip provider in advance of when you want to do a virtual field trip.

Assessment

At this point in class you should feel more comfortable with virtual field trips and identifying how they fit into your curriculum. Your final task is to incorporate the use of one free virtual field trip along with a lesson plan in the next 3 months. You can use the 2 content providers mentioned in Unit 2 and request a free trial or if any other provider you may have found.

a. Request your free trial code.

b. Do any technology tests you may be required to do in advance.

c. Search for 3 programs that are offered in the next 3 months that align to the 3 topics you chose in your discussion area.

d. Collaborating resources: Go to the Unit 3 Activity discussion page. Follow the instructions for the task. Do not duplicate resources if you have the same topic. This will Please do not duplicate resources

e. Once you have completed your virtual field trip come back and enter your reflection on how it went.

Reflect

Revisit your questions in the pre-assessment discussion area. Can you answer any remaining questions with an answer? If you still have any remaining questions which resources could you use to possibly get these questions answered?

Most providers have a phone number or online pop up chat that will allow you to ask questions easily and quickly.

How has your answer to this question changed?:My feelings about using a virtual field trip in my curriculum are.... Go back and write your final answer.
