Introduction

Welcome to my course on planning a flipped classroom lesson! This course is intended to help teachers and educators learn more about using this teaching method and how to plan a successful and effective flipped classroom lesson.
This scope of this course does not include how to create of conduct a flipped classroom (record or post the pre-class lecture, or how to facilitate the in class activities). This course focuses on the planning of this approach, since many individuals jump into this method without thinking about the design aspects. Other resources may be provided for students who would like to find out more information on those topics.


Unit 1: Using a Flipped Classroom Approach

At the end of this unit, the learner will be able to:

  • State the definition of the flipped classroom approach
  • List at least three beneficial characteristics of utilizing a flipped classroom approach
  • Select appropriate content for a flipped classroom lesson

Unit 2: Planning the Pre-class lesson

At the end of this unit, the learner will be able to:

  • List characteristics to engage students through the pre class video and reflection questions
  • Generate a storyboard, by composing a set of slides that includes text, images, and multimedia elements
  • Write a script, by listing the important talking points for the lecture
  • Write questions to promote student self reflection
  • Plan for a pre class lecture by developing a storyboard, script, and reflection questions

Unit 3: Planning the Classroom Activity

At the end of this unit, the learner will be able to:

  • Identifying appropriate content for an in class activity
  • State characteristics of activities that encourage student engagement
  • State examples of higher order skills
  • Identify an appropriate activity that will engage students and encourage development of higher order skills
