Instructor Comments on your analyses and objectives -- Jz833665 22:25, 8 March 2010 (EST)

You've had a nice beginning of your design project!

I've changed the title of this page to include your name in it; otherwise it might be easily overwritten by someone who happen to use the same page title.

Re. objectives

By completing this course, learners will be able to:
  1. Design and implement communication activities using social networking tools.
  2. Increase and enhance the quality of communication activities in FL classes
  3. Increase student fluency in the FL

Objective 1 reads fine but needs to be more specific and clearly defined as it relates to FL learning. The other two need to be re-considered because the way they are currently stated point to "far" and general benefits instead of specific learned capabilities (skills, understanding, attitudes, etc.) they will be able to develop. You need to specify what the things (e.g., skills of instructional design? facilitation? tech use? assessing students and providing feedback?) to be learned that will help the educators to "Increase and enhance the quality of communication activities in FL classes" and "Increase student fluency in the FL "

instructor comments on your ICM and units -- Jz833665 10:31, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

Your ICM has been nicely presented! A major issue to consider is to reflect on and improve the alignment between the objectives and your units.

Your four objectives as currently stated:

  1. Design and implement communication activities using social networking tools including both synchronous and asynchronous communication.
  2. Increase the quantity of communication activities by using online communication by incorporating online communication course requirements.
  3. Enhance the quality of communication activities in FL classes through more authentic communication activities, allowing students to practice real-world conversations and interact with native speakers.
  4. Increase student fluency in the FL by providing more practice and self-reflection/correction opportunities through the increased amount of practice and interactions with others.

Your first objective, Design and implement communication activities..., is really an overarching learning outcome (things to be learned). The other three are expected inferred benefits: if they learn #1 well, thus are able to design and implement well, they will achieve the other three. It seems that you have implied this: objective 2 is done "by using online communication by incorporating online communication course requirements. " (which is basically objective 1).

Learning objectives should focus on specifying capabilities to be learned instead of their benefits (just kidding and may not be appropriate: we will not say: students will be able go to college...or make money on job...)

Looking at your units, it seems that you're targeting at the following objectives (a recast of the above):

...be able to:

  1. recognize the need to incorporate authentic communication using online tools...
  2. State (summarize, give examples of) the benefits and opportunities that online networking tools may bring out... (including motivation)
  3. Design and implement communication activities using social networking tools... This is the key part related to "how to." It needs to be more specifically and explicitly addressed, perhaps in unit 3.

This might be a bit "interruptive" but I hope thinking into this structural coherence issue will help to improve your design. You do not have to adopt everything I said. Take what you think are meaningful.
