Unit 1: What is blogging? Review by Brandon West - November 21, 2014
Criteria
Learning Outcomes
Your learning outcomes are clearly stated on your mini-course homepage and within the unit. I like having the learning objectives stated at the beginning to let the participant know what they will be learning. As you move forward with completing this unit, make sure the participant will be meeting the performance objectives listed on your portfolio page.
Content-Goal Consistency
The content that is currently in the unit seems to fit your objectives. There is some content that seems to lead to 404 errors (see technical quality) that makes it difficult to assess whether they meet your goals or not.
Instructional Sequencing
This unit is not finished, so it is difficult to analyze the instructional sequencing. Based on the content here, it appears you are on the right track. My suggestion is to organize the content according to your learning objectives. For example, you can have a section called "Definition," another called "Importance of Reflection," and finally one called "Importance of Discussions." Even if your videos/websites/articles cover several of these topics at once, it might be worth introducing each topic individually or as a summary at the end of the unit.
Engagement and Interaction
I see that you have a section titled "Read/Review/Watch," "Discussion," and "Do now," which I am guessing will be the interactive components. Consider asking the participants guiding questions as you introduce content to help activate their prior knowledge.
Technical Quality
The first link in Unit 1: What is blogging? does not seem to be working properly. When I click on it, I get a 404 error stating that the page does not exist. In terms of these links, make sure to label them appropriately, so the participant knows what they are clicking on before being directed to a source outside of the wiki.
The link to "Blogs to Promote Reflective Language Learning" also leads to a 404 error when selected.
The Muncey.pdf is not linked; rather it seems to have been created as a new blank wiki page. This might mean the file didn't upload correctly or perhaps not properly linked. Before you upload a PDF, make sure you are not violating copyright. If the article is freely available online, then link to the place where it can be downloaded.
Extended Resources
Currently, there is not a section for extended activities or resources in this unit. Think about offering your students a summary of the key ideas and leaving the article reading or website exploration as an activity for this section of your mini-course.
Other Comments
Make sure to include citations to the images throughout your mini-course, unless you created them. I suggest citing them on your portfolio page or at the end with your other references.
Overall, I see a lot of potential and look forward to seeing the completed unit!
