The intent of this course is to show educators the various special education settings in a secondary environment. As the special education population increases amongst our schools, it is pivotal for educators to understand the numerous settings a child with a disability may be placed in as well as strategies that may benefit the learner in each of those settings. Introduction

The intent of this course is to show educators the various special education settings in a secondary environment. As the special education population increases amongst our schools, it is pivotal for educators to understand the numerous settings a child with a disability may be placed in as well as strategies that may benefit the learner in each of those settings. The course will also address the background behind CSE meetings and the new approach by NYS in creating IEPs that determine which setting a child will be placed in.

Performance Objectives

Course Overview:

Through engaging videos, images, graphs, and interactive formative assessments, learners will understand the various aspects of the special education secondary setting. Each individual will learn about the Individualized Education Plan, the various settings in which a child in the secondary setting with a disability may witness, and the strategies educators take to help these students learn successfully.


Specific Objectives:

Learners will be able to identify what special education is and how an IEP is created in the secondary setting, identify the four placements a student with a disability may be placed in, describe the various environments and the certain benefits they may have on the learner, identify certain strategies and forms of technology that aid in learning for students with disabilities.

Course Units

Unit 1: What is Special Education?

Learners will

  • demonstrate an understanding of special education and its services
  • identify what components are included in an Individualized Education Plan

Unit 2: What are the various placements of Secondary Special Education?

Learners will:

  • identify the four placements a student with a disability may be placed in
  • describe the various models utilized in an inclusion classroom

Unit 3: Creating Your Own Individualized Education Program Modification & Accommodation Section

Learners will:

  • become familiar with several accommodations and modifications
  • utilize technology to create their own IEP section given a situation
