ETAP 623 Spring 2014 | Ryan Mulligan's Mini Course


Topic/purpose (consider Gagne's 5 outcome types)

The purpose of this course is to establish the needs before implementing Common Core curriculum in your classroom. Too many current teachers are unaware of what it means to teach to this set of standards. As a result there has been a great backlash against it. Some of these reasons are warranted while others are not. By the year 2022 every classroom will be teaching to the Common Core standards which is why it is so crucial to understand the actual truth of what it means to you and the duties you have to perform.

By the end of this course the learner should be able to;

Explain the goal of the Common Core curriculum and background behind the new standards.
Analyze the ways in which we can design instruction around the modules.
Apply a better approach to assessment that helps students to become owners of their learning.
Analyze ways to increase the amount of differentiated instruction.(Including a look at co-teaching)

Needs Assessment

Instructional Problem The recent implementation of Common Core curriculum has caused many problems in the field of education. Teachers are unaware of their role as educator because the design of instruction has already been done. Teachers who follow the module have found issues with the sequencing of instruction and also the degree of difficulty attached to it. Herein lies the problem that this course hopes to correct. This course will clear up the misunderstandings about module implementation and also how to design instruction so that it is effectively using the common core standards.

What is to be Learned? In this course, students will learn how to apply better methods to the Common Core modules. They will learn how to design better instruction around the modules instead of simply using them as the final product.

The Learners The students of this course are teachers who are looking to gain more information about how to use the modules of Common Core curriculum.

Context for Instruction Learners of this course will be using the wikispace as a central location for readings, audio-visual learning resources and other useful teaching tools. There will be limited dialogue between students as the wikispace does not support discussion.

Exploring the Instructional Problem and Solution The problem that students of this course will go over is the misconception of Common Core. This course will hopefully provide clarity to teachers in what they are expected to do. The teachers will read about the misconceptions and have time to consider their own about what they are expected to do. The course will then clear up to them what they are actually expected to do and the actions that they need to take. By identifying the problem and then working toward correcting this problem the students gain a better understanding.

Goals of this Mini-Course The goals for this course are that the educators involved will be able to design the best possible instruction using the Common Core standards. By the end of the course, students should be able to understand their roles and responsibilities as teachers.

Performance Objectives

  • Students of this course will be able to define the misconceptions of Common Core on a given short answer test.
  • Students of this course will be able to interpret what the Common Core misconceptions mean in a short reflection piece.
  • Students of this course will be able to use a new understanding of CC standards to outline the methods they will use in their perspective curriculum.
  • Students of this course will demonstrate their understanding of the roles (teacher, student, parent) in the CC implementation process by reflecting on these specific roles.
  • Students of this course will assess their changes in understanding by taking an assessment at the end of the course.

Task Analysis

Unit One: What are the truths and misconceptions related to Common Core?

- Learners will explore the myths related to Common Core and correct any misconceptions they do have.

Unit Two: Does a newer understanding of CC Standards effect how you will teach your classroom?

- Learners will reflect on how a newer understanding will change the current practices of their classroom.

Unit Three: How do the newer practices change the roles of those involved in the educational process?

- Learners will expand on how the roles will change due to different practices.

Assessments: Learners will have a variety of self-assessments throughout the mini-course. The goal of these self-assessments are not to grade learners but rather to provide evidence of understanding or progress.

Activities Student will be able to analyze the differing conceptions of Common Core that are presently in the United States. Student will use their new understanding of CC to alter past lessons. This will help to meet the needs of newer standards. Students will use expand on how the roles of those involved in the learning process will change due to not only their alterations but the curriculum as well.
