Advance Organizers

Course Description

My course will focus on advance organizers-what they are, what they are used for and how they are used.

Needs Assessment

Learner Profile

This course is designed for the use of teachers of all levels and subject areas who are motivated to enhance student learning with the assistance of visual aides.

UNIT 1- What is an Advance Organizer and why do we use them?

Unit 1 Learning Objectives:

1. Define what an advance organizer is

2. Recognize the purpose(s) of advance organizers

3. Discriminate between advance organizers and graphic organizers

This unit provides clear and succinct definitions and purposes of advance organizers. I purposely chose to not get very "wordy" as this is a straightforward and brief topic. My intent is for the learner to focus in on the important and relevant information, rather than providing a lengthy amount of information that one would need to sift through.

I chose to begin the course using the components of a KWL chart. Not only will this encourage the learner to narrow down what he or she expects to obtain from this course, but it is also providing the learner with first hand experience of using an advance organizer and why they are effective.

UNIT 2-Definitions of Advance Organizers

Unit 2 Learning Objective:

1. Identify the various ways in which advance organizers can be utilized

2. Utilize advance organizers to enhance student learning

This unit provides descriptions and examples of advance organizers. This will allow the learner to understand and visualize how each one is used. This will enable him or her to pick the advance organizers that best suit their needs.

UNIT 3

Unit 3 Performance Objectives

1. Critique a lesson sample and reflect upon the use of an advance organizer

2. Develop a lesson plan that exhibits the proper use of advance organizers
