My Topic and Purpose

My Mini-Course topic is focused on how do we help develop intrinsic motivation in students. My focus will be in a High School Mathematics classroom but the ideas mentioned will be applicable across all grade levels and disciplines. The purpose for choosing this topic is to help improve my own teaching ability while working to help my own students while also providing other teachers the tools the may need in their classroom. This course will revolve around some key concepts in developing intrinsic motivation in students

Learning Outcomes

Teachers will be able to:

1) Develop a classroom environment and classroom routines to promote intrinsic motivation.

2) Gather and devlop strategies to encourage intrinsic motivation through student choice.

3) Provide instruction and feedback to promote intrinsic motivation.

Needs Assessment

This mini-course will address the need for developing intrinsic motivation in our students. This mini-course also addresses the use of a positive learning environment, genuine teacher-student relationships, and growth mindset.

Performance-Based Objectives

Teachers will:

1) Design a classroom environment that promotes a positive learning environment.

2) Produce a handout highlighting five strategies that promote student choice.

3) Create a rubric that utulizes honest and constructive feedback.

4) Write a lesson or project that incorporates student choice and the topics application to everyday life.

Course Overview

Unit 1: Developing an Environment Where Students Want to Learn

Target objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, participants will:

1. understand how to design a learning environment that provides comfort and practical use for students; and

2. realize the value comfort and safety have on a students intrinsic motivation.

Unit 2: Developing and Implememnting Strategies to Encourage Student Choice

Target objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, participants will:

1. have compiled several effective strategies used to give students choice.

2. understand the power student choice has on self-motivation in the classroom.

Unit 3: Meaningful Feedback

Target objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, participants will:

1. understand the imporance of honest and meaningful feedback in learning.
