About me

I wanted to be a teacher since I was in elementary school because I wanted to make a difference in children’s lives. During my undergraduate education at the College of Saint Rose, I had an internship teaching children with special needs. That experience changed my perception of teaching and my education path. After graduating, I accepted a job as a Special Education Teacher in the elementary school I attended as a child.

A third year special education teacher, I now focus on specific disabilities. I have taught a 3rd-5th grade, 1:15:1 self-contained class. Now I teach a 4th and 5th grade, 1:12:1 self-contained class. My research interests include schizophrenia and the strategies that teachers can use to help a child with schizophrenia.

I am a hiker, a dog lover, a world traveler, and an athlete (ask me about my grandmother who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame).

My Topic and Purpose

My topic is Schizophrenia. The purpose of this course will be to explore Schizophrenia and to provide instructional practices, techniques, and resources to assist students with Schizophrenia. This course can also be used to help parents who have a child with Schizophrenia. Parents will be provided resources and supports to use at home to help their child with Schizophrenia.


Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to:

  • Define Schizophrenia.
  • Identify the five types of Schizophrenia.
  • Select and implement different instructional approaches and ideas to incorporate into their teaching with students with Schizophrenia.
  • Select and implement different supports for parents to incorporate into their home for their child with Schizophrenia.

Needs Assessment

Problem

When we think of Schizophrenia, we may imagine students who are talking/screaming to themselves, hallucinating, and can be a challenge in the classroom. I know as a 12:1:1 elementary school special education teacher, some students portray these descriptions. However, its important to understand that Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with Schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality, which causes significant distress for the individual, their family members, and teachers. It is important for all teachers and parents to know supports they can use when dealing with children with Schizophrenia.

What is to be Learned

Learners will be introduced to the definition of Schizophrenia. In addition, learners will be informed of the five types of Schizophrenia. Learners will also discover various resources and ideas to implement into their instruction for children with Schizophrenia. Furthermore, parents will also find resources and supports that will help them with their child at home.

Overall, this course will be helpful for educators and other occupations in the school setting that may be looking for background knowledge and resources about Schizophrenia. Not only will learners understand the definition of Schizophrenia and the different types, but they should also be able to use what is learned in this course to apply it to all students who may struggle with Schizophrenia. This course will also be helpful for parents who have a child with Schizophrenia. They will understand the different resources, supports, and strategies that will be beneficial for them.

Instructional Content

Since this course is fully online, it is necessary for students to have access to a computer with reliable internet connection. The majority of instruction will occur through resources like readings and videos. Participants will be assessed through scenario-based questions that may occur with students with Schizophrenia. Instruction will vary, but the majority of resources in this course will come from readings, videos, and/or lectures. Participants will be assessed through a series of activities to reinforce understanding of Schizophrenia and strategies to support students with Schizophrenia and help parents.

Exploring the Problem and Solution

Learners will be exploring the definition of Schizophrenia and also be exploring the different types of Schizophrenia. Through activities, participants will also be able to discover a variety of strategies to support students with Schizophrenia in the classroom and at home.

Goals

The overall goal for this course is for general education teachers, special education teachers, and parents to better comprehend the definition of Schizophrenia, identify the five types of Schizophrenia and the instructional approaches and strategies to better support students with Schizophrenia.

Analysis of the Learner and Context

Learner Analysis: This course will be used for teachers who are seeking knowledge about the definition of Schizophrenia, the types and how to support students who have Schizophrenia. Learners will become knowledgeable in the definition of Schizophrenia, the different types of Schizophrenia as well as strategies and supports they can use in the classroom with students who struggle with mental health disorders. In addition, this course will also be used for parents who have a child with Schizophrenia . Parents will become well educated in strategies and supports that they can use at home with their child.

Context for Instruction: Learners will learn online during this mini-course. A stable internet connection and reliable computer are essential for this mini-course.

Performance-Based Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define what Schizophrenia is.
  • Identify the five types of Schizophrenia.
  • Give examples of best practices and strategies for teaching and working with students with Schizophrenia.
  • Give examples of best resources and supports for parents living with a child with Schizophrenia.
