Lesson 4: What technological tools can be used to integrate metacognitive development in mathematics instruction?

Objective

Learners will identify at least 2 different tools that can be utilized to develop metacognition in math instruction and justify the use of these tools in their specific instructional context in writing.

Case Study

Mrs. B begins teaching a lesson on how to add fractions with like denominators to a small group of 6th grade special education students who are all significantly below grade level in math. After direct instruction including both algorithmic steps (add the numerators and keep the denominator) and conceptual development (Why do we keep the denominator? Did the size of the pieces change?), Mrs. B begins circulating the room. She notices one student is adding the numerators and the denominators (1/5 + 2/5 = 3/10). What should Mrs. B do to help this student?


Look back at what you wrote as a response to the case study scenario in lesson three. What technologies can be used to implement the three strategies that you chose for Mrs. B to use in helping this student develop their metacognitive abilities in this specific context? Record your thoughts and save them for later.

In this lesson, you will connect what you have learned in lessons 1, 2, and 3 to the world of technology. Today's classrooms are filled with 21st century learners. These learners utilize technology on a daily basis. They play video games, use tablets and an endless list of apps. This is their world, and connecting learning with technology can make it more relevant and meaningful to them. The question now is "What can we do to connect math, metacognition, and technology?" During your investigation, you will read about the value and importance of these connections. You will read about and observe the use of technology in integrating metacognitive development in mathematics instruction. You will explore a variety of web-based tools that can be utilized in your own classrooms. You will discuss how these tools can be used in your own instructional contexts. You will also complete your quick reference guide and share it with your classmates for peer assessment before submitting it for final approval. While the integration of metacognition can be achieved in a "low-tech" manner, the use of technology to do so can increase relevance and motivation for your students.

Your initial post should include an answer to these questions which draws on what you have watched and read and connects to your experiences as a student and teacher. Respond to at least two of your classmates' posts.

Application

You will continue creating a guide for your colleagues on how to integrate metacognitive development in mathematics instruction. To apply what you have learned in Lesson 4, you will create a section for your guide in which you will identify, explain, and give examples for at least 2 different technologies that can be used to integrate metacognitive development in mathematics instruction. In this section you must:

  • Identify at least 2 different technological tools that can be used to integrate metacognitive development in mathematics instruction.
  • Explain how they can be used effectively and why they would be beneficial for student learning.
  • Show how they would be used in the context of the case study you created in lesson 2.

Reflection

Use the Discussion page for Lesson 4 to share your reflection on what you have learned and how you have learned it. Your reflection should include:

  • what you have learned about technologies that can be used to develop metacognition in mathematics instruction.
  • how you have learned it.
  • what you want to learn more about with regards to technologies that can be used to develop metacognition in mathematics instruction.

Closure
