Project Intent

Formative assessment is an important part of evaluating the understanding of learners throughout the duration of a course. With the rapidly expanding field of educational technology, there have been a number of tools to aid educators in this process. Some of these tools include Kahoot, Edpuzzle, and Socrative. Learning Objectives

The objectives of this mini-course are for educators to...

    1. Comprehend the value of continual formative assessment
    2. Design effective formative assessments using one (or more) of the tools listed above
    3. Evaluate student understanding and misconceptions using the results of formative assessment


Needs Assessment

Instructional Need: Many teachers focus their assessment practices on summative assessment, lacking sufficient formative assessment throughout the duration of a course. Formative assessment is "assessment that aims to support learning" and can be used diagnostically, during, and after the learning process (Izci, 2016). Factors that affect teachers' implementation of formative assessment include but are not limited to internal school support, personal beliefs and values, school environment, pressure from high stakes testing, and lack of time and resources (Izci, 2016).


In addition to the need for education on how to actually design and use formative assessments is the need for "support tools to help teachers learn to implement the full range of assessment types, gather evidence, make sense of the data, and adjust instruction accordingly" (Shute and Kim, 2014). Without a working knowledge of how to use the results of formative assessment, educators are unable to make modifications to their teaching in order to aid in the learning of their students. "For formative assessment to be embraced more widely there should be more support—such as through professional development—for teachers. This would enable them to be more comfortable and skilled using formative assessment in their classrooms" (Shute and Kim, 2014).

Computer-based formative assessment has begun to emerge as a new way of efficiently and seamlessly implementing FA into the classroom environment. These assessments do not always look like typical assessments but still results in the collection of important data about student learning. Shute and Kim (2014) refer to this seamlessly integrated assessment as stealth assessment, defined as:


"Stealth assessment is an evidence-based approach to assessment where the tasks that students are engaged with are highly interactive and immersive, such as within video games or other computer-based instructional systems."


Course Objective: The objective of this mini-course is to support teacher design and use of formative assessment by educating participants on the benefits of FA results on teaching and learning. By using various instructional technology resources, the participants will learn to design and analyze formative assessment results in a time efficient manner.

Performance Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define formative assessment
  2. Design a customized formative assessment using the Kahoot software
  3. Collect and analyze formative assessment data
  4. Modify a lesson based on formative assessment results

Task Analysis

Lesson 1: What is formative assessment?

  1. Learners will define formative assessment.
  2. Learners will evaluate different forms of formative assessment.


Lesson 2: How can Kahoot facilitate the formative assessment process?

  1. Learners will experience a Kahoot assessment.
  2. Learners will become familiarized with the Kahoot platform (Kahoot.it).
  3. Learners will design a Kahoot including multimedia on a topic of their choice.


Lesson 3: How can formative assessment data be analyzed and used for lesson revision?

  1. Learners will collect data using their created Kahoot.
  2. Learners will view and analyze examples of formative assessment data.
  3. Learners will suggest lesson modifications or revision activities based on formative assessment data.
