Topic/purpose

Needs Assessment
1. The Problem
When students are showing undesired behavior teachers will usually discipline the student. This is usually just a short term solution for the problem behavior. The problem with this is that the problem behavior will most likely show up again. Teachers need figure out what is causing the behavior and how to solve behaviors long term.
2. What is to be Learned?
Participants will learn an overview of what an Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is. They will also learn how to conduct a FBA.
3. The Participants
Participants will include educators teaching in K-5 environments.
4. Context for Instruction
Participants in this mini-course will access content in an online form. Access to the instructional content will require Internet connectivity, computer with ability to open and edit Microsoft Office documents,open PDF documents, and view online videos.
5. Exploring the Instructional Problem and Solution
Participants in this mini-course will learn how to conduct a FBA.
6. Goals of this Mini-Course
The main goal of the mini-course is for participants to develop a deeper understanding of Functional Behavioral Assessment is and how it can be a problem solving process for addressing student problem behavior. By the end of the course, participants should be capable of being able to conduct their own FBA in a school setting.

- Participants will learn how to analyze an FBA to determine the antecedents that set the stage for challenging behavior.
- Participants will learn how to analyze an FBA to determine the function of the behavior.
- Participants will learn how to conduct an FBA.

Unit 1: Introduction to Principles of Reinforcement and Punishmentt
- Participants will learn an overview of concepts surrounding positive and negative reinforcement to increase or maintain behavior and punishment to decrease behavior.
Unit 2: Foundations of Functional Behavior Assessment
- Participants will learn and participate in a discussion about what constitutes functions of behavior and an introduction to the direct method of functional behavior assessment.
Unit 3: Conducting and Analyzing the Functional Behavior Assessment
- Participants will learn how to conduct your own functional behavior assessment and analyze the results
Unit 4:Developing Function Based Intervention Methods
- Participants will learn and discuss how changes to antecedents and consequences of challenging behavior can be made and how to reinforce replacement behaviors.
