Intent of Project

This course will provide the following learning outcomes:

  • Positive attitude towards web-based learning environments
  • Verbal information about capabilities offered by web-based instruction
  • Intellectual Skill

Data analysis Multimodal Learning in Web-based Environments

Needs Analysis for Data Analysis for Differentiated Instruction

1. Problem: Educators are not always aware of web technologies that can support multimodal learning in their students.

2. What is to be learned: Verbal information about different web capabilities; Ease of web publishing as a basis for web-based portfolios; Advantages of web-based project and portfolio development; general approaches for supporting web-based learning.

3. The Learners: High school teachers who’ve already adopted a constructivist approach to teaching but lack content knowledge of multimedia and interactive capabilities of the web.

4. Instructional Context: If supported by the wiki, multimedia will be used to teach the learner about multimedia learning on the web. Though multimedia will be primarily used to present verbal information, Marshall McLuhan once said that the medium is the message. The presentation elements in the lesson will affect learning outcomes as much as the content.

5. Exploring the problem and solution: Fletcher, 1996, stated, "When you go to the hardware store to buy a drill, you don’t actually want a drill, you want a hole, they don’t sell holes at the hardware store, but they do sell drills, which are the technology used to make holes. We must not lose sight that technology for the most part is a tool and it should be used in applications which address educational concerns." (p. 87) There is often a disconnect between the pedagogical goals of instruction and the appropriate alignment with technology.

6. Goals: Educators are aware of web-based technologies that support multimodal learning in their students. They're capable of providing their students with information about web capabilities and pointing them to available resources that support their multimedia development.
