About Me

I am a graduate student at the University of Albany in the Curriculum Design and Instructional Technology Program. I am a first year public school Math teacher working at the high school I graduated from in the Hudson Valley of New York State. My Bachelor's degree is in Mathematics from Hartwick College and I am dual certified in Secondary Education and Special Education. This year, my classes consist of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra AIS.

My Topic and Purpose

My Mini-Course topic is focused on how do we help develop intrinsic motivation in students. My focus will be in a High School Mathematics classroom but the ideas mentioned will be applicable across all grade levels and disciplines. The purpose for choosing this topic is to help improve my own teaching ability while working to help my own students while also providing other teachers the tools the may need in their classroom.

Learning Outcomes

Teachers will be able to:

1) Identify and build upon motivation for individual students.

2) Provide instruction and feedback to promote intrinsic motivation.

3) Develop a classroom environment and classroom routines to promote intrinsic motivation.

Needs Assessment

This mini-course will address the need for developing intrinsic motivation in our students. This mini-course also addresses the use of a positive learning environment, genuine teacher-student relationships, and growth mindset.

Performance-Based Objectives

Teachers will:

1) Design a classroom environment that promotes a positive learning environment.

2) Produce a handout highlighting five strategies that promote student choice.

3) Create a rubric that utulizes honest and constructive feedback.

4) Write a lesson or project that incorporates student choice and the topics application to everyday life.

Task Analysis

COURSE PURPOSE

This course aims to give educators methods or tools that can help develop intrinsic motivation in their students. By having students that are intrinsically motivated we can focus on our instructional design and student engagement with the curriculum rather than 'bribing' students to put in effort in class or on homework.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Participants in this course will be able to:

1) Utulize a classroom design that promotes collaboration and student choice.

2) Implement several strategies that encourage student choice.

3) Provide honest and constructive feedback to students.

4) Use a self-motivated lesson or project.

PREREQUISITE SKILLS

This course will require a high level of understanding and familiarity with pedagogical theory and classroom applications. Participants in this mini-course should have their own classroom and class to implement the ideas discussed in this unit.

Unit 1: Developing an Environment Where Students Want to Learn

Target objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, participants will:

1. understand how to design a learning environment that provides comfort and practical use for students; and

2. realize the value comfort and safety have on a students intrinsic motivation.

Activities

  • Discussion on how learning environments affect motivation
  • Classroom Design Activity

Unit 2: Developing and Implememnting Strategies to Encourage Student Choice

Target objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, participants will:

1. have compiled several effective strategies used to give students choice.

2. understand the power student choice has on self-motivation in the classroom.

Activities

  • Exchange and discuss different instructional strategies that provide student choice.
  • Compile a class reference book with several different instructional strategies.

Unit 3: Meaningful Feedback

Target objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, participants will:

1. understand the imporance of honest and meaningful feedback in learning.

2. design a rubric that promotes constructive feedback and growth mindset.

Activities

  • Develop a rubric that fosters growth mindset through the use of feedback.

Unit 4: Putting it all Together

Target objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, participants will:

1. incorporate all of the previous topics into the design of a lesson or project.

Activities

  • Utilize all that we have discussed thus far to design a lesson or project that encourages intrinsic motivation.
